An Intensive 5-day Training Course
NDT L2 – Visual Testing (VT)
The Conventional Tool for Flaws Detection
CLASSROOM DATES
INTRODUCTION
Visual Testing is the most commonly used Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method in the industry. Most test methods require that the inspector looks at the surface of the part being inspected which means that visual inspection is the first step for these other test methods. As the name implies, Visual Testing involves the visual observation of the surface of a test object to evaluate the presence of surface discontinuities.
There is one aspect in which a direct visual test differs from any other Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method. The discontinuities that the inspectors look for are visible. That makes Visual Testing unique because all other Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods look at indications of the discontinuities and never show the discontinuities directly. The inspector discerns the liquid penetrant Penetrant Testing (PT) and magnetic particle Magnetic Testing (MT) indications with the naked eye, but it is not the discontinuity itself.
