INTRODUCTION
Electrical utilities are facing a nerve-racking problem: the continuous increase of aged electrical plant population. Serious accidents and blackouts have occurred worldwide, which caused millions of dollars damages to power industry. Unfortunately, in the current economical climate, no utility can afford replacing all aged equipment according to their designed lifetime. Even for relatively new equipment, insulation failures often occur due to various problems such as manufacture defects and inappropriate maintenance. It is therefore important to closely monitor the insulation condition and to implement advanced maintenance strategies for electrical plant. This programme covers the important aspects of high voltage insulation tests, condition monitoring and diagnostic techniques especially the new on-line condition monitoring techniques and insulation condition assessments using artificial intelligence. Some important case studies will also be presented in the programme.

TRAINING METHODOLOGY
Problem-based teaching methods will be used in the programme. Participants will learn by the analysis of basic theories, case studies, discussions, exercises, questionnaires and training videos. Approved high quality manuals, presentation ppt slides and the speaker’s book will be used throughout the programme.

Based on the author’s book “Condition Assessment of HV Insulation” recently published by IET Press, UK, the programme is designed to provide a thorough coverage of up-to-date technology on insulation condition monitoring, especially on-line condition assessment of HV distribution equipment such as power cables, transformers and GIS. Focus will also be put on the modern maintenance strategies and case studies. It has been proved that applying the new techniques to asset management, higher equipment availability as well as greater safety and longer service life have been achieved.
