INTRODUCTION

Corporations around the world are finding themselves increasingly under pressure to operate in a responsible manner with respect to the community in which they operate and the global community more broadly. This means managing ethically and in a sustainable way that meets society's expectations with respect to economic, environmental and social performance - that is, a "triple bottom line" approach.

Corporate Social Responsibility means managing to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

This programme introduces participants to the key issues associated with corporate social responsibility, the current body of knowledge and frameworks for dealing with Corporate Social Responsibility issues, in support of developing a strategic approach to social responsibility, sustainability and ethical management that integrate ethical and socially responsible corporate behaviour in to the organisational culture.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

Corporate social responsibility and ethical management issues potentially affect everyone in the organisation. However, management levels must take a leadership role in shaping their organisation's response to corporate social responsibility issues impacting on their organisations.

It is at these levels that the foundations of an organisational culture that promotes ethical management as a norm are built and supported.

The Corporate Social Responsibility programme introduces participants to concepts, methodologies, tools and techniques that are just as relevant to private sector and public sector environments, in services, process or manufacturing organisations with equal effectiveness.

This programme challenges participants at a fundamental level to take a leadership role in managing and shaping what is possibly the most significant business issue of our time.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Corporate Social Responsibility programme are to give participants a broad understanding and working knowledge of the key philosophies, concepts, principles, tools and techniques required to address corporate social responsibility and ethical management issues strategically and in a sustainable manner. At the end of this programme, participants should have a broad understanding of and be able to:

  • Compare and contrast alternative views about the foundations of social responsibility and ethical management  across a range of situations;
  • Critically analyse and evaluate social, ethical and corporate responsibility issues, influences and responses available to modern managers;
  • Critically reflect upon their own position and that of the business environment, with regard to the stages of development of corporate social responsibility;
  • Critically reflect upon their own ethical position and the development of an individual's ethical stance in an organisation.

PROGRAMME METHODOLOGY

The Corporate Social Responsibility programme will be intensive and use a mix of learning methods.

Participants will be introduced to certain concepts, techniques or issues through formal lecture presentations. It is expected that lecture presentations will be interwoven with questions, comments and discussion initiated by participants.

Management games, group work, individual work, case studies and presentations will be used to provide opportunities to reinforce concepts and practice techniques or skills.

PROGRAMME SUMMARY

The programme takes a strategic approach and commences with establishing the link to strategy and the integration of social responsibility issues with strategy. Each of the key issues areas are then addressed in detail.

A driver component of externally socially responsible behaviour is an internal culture that promotes social responsibility and values ethical behaviours. The two go hand-in-hand. The issues of managerial ethics and how we establish an internal culture that values ethical behaviour and work to improve it is also addressed.

The programme concludes with an examination of the case studies and examples considered to be best practice as a pre-requisite to establishing out own agenda for action.
