The Art of Strategic Management

The words ‘Management’ and ‘Strategy’ have filled bookshelves all over the world. However, one book stands above all others, and that is “The Art of War”, a meditation on the rules of war that was first published in China, possibly by Sun Tzu. It has become a best seller and still reverberates with readers today. The first few lines make clear, “the art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected.”

Nor can it be neglected in our 21st Century world of rapid change, complexity and global market. The aim is the same as that of Sun Tzu – “how are we going to win?” The EuroMaTech training course “the Art of Strategic Managements” asks the same challenging question. For a company to survive it must win and to win it needs a strategy that will beat their competitors. That strategy must be flexible and adapt quickly to changing circumstances, many of which are outside the company’s control. For instance, do you remember Kodak? Who has a camera now? What about cassette recorders, CD’s and DVD’s all being replaced by downloads. In a world of competition there are very few prizes for coming second.

This course on Strategic Management focuses on the formulation and implementation of the major objectives taken by a company’s senior managers based on consideration of resources and of an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes. Consequently, strategy is designed to meet the long-term goals of a business by taking a series of steps and the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals. Strategies establish direction, focus effort, define or clarify the organization, and provide consistency or guidance in response to the environment.

Having managed the formulation of the strategy, you must now manage the implementation of the strategy. This is where everybody from the CEO to the new person on the shop floor must align their area of responsibilities achieving success in attaining their strategic goals to fulfilL the Company Vision. In the words of a Japanese proverb

“Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare.

Strategic Management gives the employees a wider perspective of their company where they can better understand how their job fits into the entire organizational plan and how it is co-related to other organizational members. It is the managing of employees in a way that maximizes the ability of achieving business objectives. The employees become more trustworthy, more committed and more satisfied when they can see and understand where the company is going. Thus, the managers and employees must do the right things in the right manner. They need to be both effective and efficient. This is of the major roles of strategic management to incorporate various functional areas of the company completely and to ensure these functional areas match and get together well.
